ACTION! The Afterglow Film Festival, with the help of TheCoolKids Movement, presented a week long filmmaking workshop July 20th - 24th at the Boys and Girls Club of Grenada. Thirty kids ages 8 – 18 brainstormed ideas, wrote scripts, created storyboards, filmed and produced a short film. The children were encouraged to create films that would “Inspire Positive Change”.
Three teams were formed, the students chose the names: Team 100, Team Fresh, and Team Squad. “Two of the teams decided to produce films on the subject of bullying; the other decided on the topic of anti-violence.” said Katrina Kinder, Director of the Afterglow Film Festival.
“If somebody was being bullied, they could look at our movie and relate it to their life” said Dalarrious Shelton, Age 16. “My favorite part of this workshop was coming together as a team to make it happen”.
“My favorite thing about this workshop is that we got to make a movie on a very important subject” said Logan Wesley, Age 12.
Yolanda Green, Program Coordinator of the Boys and Girls Club of Grenada stated, “I’m grateful to Afterglow for bringing this project to the Boys and Girls Club. It has helped the kids to see what they’re capable of and to see their potential. It also helped them to realize possible career options in the field of filmmaking.” The kids, when asked their thoughts on the week’s activities, answered that making these films made them feel “proud”, “accomplished”, “confident” and “happy”.
The completed films played for a very excited audience on the last day of the workshop. Their films will also play at the Grenada Afterglow Film Festival on October 3rd in downtown Grenada at First & Green. Come on out and show your support for these new young filmmakers! The Grenada Afterglow Film Festival and Filmmaking Workshop are projects of the Grenada Community Foundation and made possible by donations.
